Ukraine's Foreign Ministry on Putin-Bush transcripts: Root cause of war has always been Russia's imperial tumour

Heorhii Tykhyi, spokesperson for Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, commenting on the published transcripts of conversations between Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin and former US president George Bush, has stated that the root cause of Russia's full-scale aggression against Ukraine has always been Russia's "imperial tumour".

Details: Tykhyi said that the transcripts refute the Kremlin's claim that the war against Ukraine was triggered by the 2013-2014 Ukrainian Revolution of Dignity.

Quote: "Putin denied Ukraine's right to exist in 2001. 21 years before the full-scale invasion and 13 years before the Revolution of Dignity, which he often blames as the 'root cause' for the war. The root cause has always been and remains the imperial tumour in his and other Russian heads."

Background:

  • In the United States, several transcripts of conversations between Putin and Bush were published, in which Putin argued that Ukraine is an artificial state with a fragmented society and warned of a long-term confrontation with the West if Ukraine were admitted to NATO.
  • During these conversations, Putin also raised the issue of Russia potentially being admitted to NATO.
